Do I Need an Urn?

Time after time, one of cremation families most common questions is weather or not they need to purchase an urn for their loved one’s ashes. Although there are many potential urn choices, the short answer is…families should always do whatever is in their heart. The last thing anyone wants is for there to be regrets later.

Always remember how easy it is for the funeral director to spend their client’s money. Ideally, the families options should be given to them, and they should decide for themselves what’s best. The answer they come up with could potentially make a several hundred dollar difference in the final bill.

Before one puts any thought into color, shape or size of an urn, there should be a decision made as to the urn’s necessity. Without any urn upgrade, the ashes are returned in a “temporary urn”. This urn is not necessarily temporary. This for namesake purposes only. Although not fancy at all, it’s very suitable for most types of final disposition of ashes, to include scattering or burial. Furthermore, for the temporary urn, there’s no up-charge. The family has already paid for this as part of their original cremation package charges.

Important and sensitive choices should not be taken lightly, especially when it comes to a loved one’s cremation. These are forever choices that families will have to live with. As to weather or not an upgrade urn purchase should happen…the answer is…it’s a heart thing.
